While we can't all run away....September 8, 2010 Niquey(Royal Oak, MI) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had heard mixed reviews on this book and finally decided to read it for myself to see what I thought of the book, and having done that, I've reached a few conclusions.
Yes, the author can be incredibly self-absorbed. As can all memoir authors. That's why they call them memoirs.
Yes, the author was able to run away, to escape from her life, to try (successfully) to find herself. What woman hasn't wanted to do that, I ask you? Just because she has been able to do that doesn't make her evil or self absorbed. It makes her blessed.
Yes, I truly believe that unless you've suffered something catastrophic such as a bad accident, the death of a close loved one, or a divorce, you will find the author to be narcissistic. Having gone thru a disasterous marriage and subsequently divorce, coupled with the death of my brother and two rounds of unemployment, I am highly qualified to relate, and relate well, to this author's plight.
This book is an enjoyable read, and one of the few books I've ever strung out into days worth of reading just because I've wanted to savor the reading.
Good readSeptember 8, 2010 Tera Bytes(Missouri) I really liked reading this book. I heard of it from the previews of the movie that is out now. I loved reading about her journey through her travels and finding god. It really hit home for me when she mentions in the book how some are never in the moment and always thinking about the past or worrying about the future because that is exactly what I do. It just made me realize how much time I waste just ruminating over and over about things. It also got me thinking about the possibility of meditation to calm my mind. It's not the best book in the world and some may not like it at all, but I thought it was an very enjoyable read.
Is this fiction?September 7, 2010 Real enough ..... 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Let us all be real with ourselves. Somewhere on these pages we were entertained. There is usually tworeasons for buying a book one is simply to be entertained from the pen of someone else's veiwpoint. Or two if you not buying a book for entertainment, it probably means you want to get the gleen some little knowledge from it, ie purchasing your college textbook, now those books were really entertaining yea- right!! If is not your own experience then why waste time criticizing some else's experience, basically you end up criticizing what you never experienced. Rather than spend time criticizing; how about spending more time sharing and healing. When we share our experiences that we have lived through we heal ourselves and as a bonus sometimes we heal others. Our gift to others is only truly gifted through what we share. Let's face it no experience is worth experiencing if we cannot share with others. While sometimes others have experiences that are not our cup of tea but then again it is not our experience- is it?. For entertainment's sake this book is what it is an experience shared on some pages with a cover and a title. Personally, I think we all need to do more living, sharing of ourselves, and less taking life experiences and others for granted.
