Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good introduction   March 25, 2010

The book focuses on Microsoft SQL Server. It occasionally points out a solution that exists under MS SQL server and not under the ANSI SQL standard.

A small practice database is presented. It is small enough for the reader to key in. It allows the lessons to be experienced hands on.

The examples are generally error free.

Every chapter presents a quiz like set of brief challenges to help the reader practice the previous lessons.

The text can be wordy, but not as wordy as many Microsoft Press books.

I have not had the opportunity to sit down and read the material. I was satisfied with the condition.

Mr Petkovic approaches his writing like a skilled and gifted artisan who is confident and has a complete understanding of a very complex subject (SQL Server).
Our IT group has used his books in preference to those from Microsoft Press and others for several versions.
His chapter layout and content is concise and clear, which is helpful when you need a "Quick Win" on syntax of some related operational question.
As always we rate his work with five stars.

4 out of 5 stars The title is very accurate   December 9, 2008

If you are new to Microsoft SQL Server and relational databases or have been away from the technology for a while, this book will be very helpful. The author takes time upfront to start you off with the basics of SQL and work his way through most of the functionality in the current version of SQL Server. The examples are simple to understand. I do wish there had been more info on the Spatial Data Types, but that is probably because I am not a beginner on that subject and wanted to dive into more GIS analysis than this book was ready to provide.
